ANALYSIS
Project Overview

As part of a Needs Assessment and Analysis class (R621), we had to conduct a needs assessment project for a real client. Our team approached a Canadian University's Faculty of Health to serve as our client in their efforts to implement blended learning into their curricula.

In essence, the client had no idea of how to kickstart this endeavor. Hence as part of this project, our team used PEST (Political, Economical, Social, Technological) analysis as a framework to quickly gather all the background information surrounding this case. At the same time, the client was looking to strengthen the university's reputation and rankings. Hence we used the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis to capitalize on the university's strengths as well as work on the weaknesses. The identified opportunities and threats functioned as boundaries to highlight the areas for potential growth as well as areas to keep out of. Lastly, we utilized FFA (Force Field Analysis) to highlight the key focus areas to work on and a migration strategy to implement the key changes and recommendations.

* Due to sensitivity of information presented and fear that the university might be perceived negatively, the client and university request to remain anonymous.
Context

- Project time frame: Sep - Nov 2011.
- Team Composition: 3 graduate students from Indiana, Michigan and Toronto enrolled in R621class.

Skills Displayed

- Analysis - through the use of tools such as PEST, SWOT and FFA.
- Communications - managing online collaboration and distant communication through Adobe Connect, Skype.
- Strategy articulation - use of cause analysis to determine key choke points hindering project and employment of migration strategy to chart the different phases of implementation.
- Client management - client was initially not aware of what exactly is Needs Assessment and its usefulness. Despite the short project time frame, we converted the client and she saw merits in the work we produced
- Technology - Microsoft Office, Adobe Connect, Skype, Goggle Documents, Dropbox, Moodle (learning management system used by client).
